Sodium hydroxide is sometimes known as lye and caustic soda. It’s an inorganic compound that’s a white solid ionic compound. It’s a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures. It may cause severe chemical burns when it comes in contact with just about anything.
It is highly soluble in water and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. Sodium hydroxide can be found to be used in many industries – ranging from pulp and paper manufacturing to making soaps and detergents.
Chemical Function/Application:
As sodium hydroxide is used in many industries, here are some common areas that it is used in.
- Chemical pulping: sodium hydroxide is popularly used in wood pulping or making powder. Sometimes, it is used to regenerate fibers. It is an important component of the white liquor solution used to separate lignin from cellulose fibers in the kraft process. Sometimes it is used in bleaching the brown pulp that comes from the pulping process.
- Tissue digestion: sodium hydroxide is used to help digest tissues. It’s the same process that is used with farm animals at one time. It involves placing a carcass into a sealed chamber, then adding some sodium hydroxide and water. The process will then break the chemical bonds that keep the flesh intact. It will eventually turn the carcass into a liquid with a coffee-like appearance. After that, the only thing that remains are the bone hulls, which can be crushed between your fingertips.
- Food preparation: Sometimes in the food industries, sodium hydroxide is used to wash or chemically-peel fruits and vegetables. Sometimes it is used in chocolate and cocoa processing, caramel coloring production, poultry scalding, soft drink processing, among others. However, it is difficult to get sodium hydroxide in large quantities. As it is an issue for food industries, they often use sodium carbonate instead of sodium hydroxide.
