Peracetic acid is a colorless liquid with a characteristic bitter smell that smells similar to acetic acid. It is a highly corrosive acid. It’s a slightly weaker acid when compared to acetic acid but still acidic nonetheless.
It is produced industrially by the autoxidation of acetaldehyde. Scientists often make it by treating acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide with strong acid catalysts. It can be used to generate a solution of the acid with a lower water content.
Chemical Function/Application:
In the mid-1980s, the USA classified peracetic acid as an antimicrobial for indoor use on hard surfaces. The same chemical is also used in agriculture premises, food establishments, medical facilities, and household bathrooms. It was also used in dairy and cheese processing plants, on food processing equipment, and is pasteurizers in breweries, wineries, and beverage plants.
- Epoxidation: As mentioned before that peracetic acid is less corrosive and less active, in various forms it is used for the epoxidation of various alkenes. Some industries use it for unsaturated fats, synthetic and natural rubbers, and natural products such as pinene.
