- Foods and foodstuffs: palmitic acid is known to be an inexpensive chemical and it adds texture and mouthfeel to processed foods. You can also find palmitic acid and its sodium salt used in foodstuffs. It is a permitted natural additive in organic products.
- Military use: The aluminium salt found in palmitic acid is used as a thickening agent of napalm for military actions.
- Schizophrenia: palmitic acid is used in anti-psychotic medication, paliperidone palmitate, to treat schizophrenia. It has been synthesized by using the oily palmitate ester as a long-acting release carrier medium when injected intramuscularly.
- Surfactant: palmitic acid is used to produce soaps, cosmetics, and industrial mold release agents. The applications use sodium palmitate, which is usually obtained by saponification of palm oil. Palm oil that is rendered from palm trees is then treated with sodium hydroxide. It causes hydrolysis of the ester groups, yielding glycerol and sodium palmitate.
