Palm fatty acid is more commonly addressed as palm fatty acid distillate, or PFAD for short. It’s a processing residue resulting from the physical refining of crude palm oil products. If you put it at room temperature, it’ll take the form of a light brown semi-solid. If it’s melted or put under extreme heat, it will melt into a brown liquid. The majority of PFAD (up to 80%) is fatty acid (FFA).
It’s major components are palmitic acid and oleic acid. The remaining 20% is made of components such as triglycerides, partial glycerides, and vitamin E, sterols and squalenese.
PFAD is a residue that comes from palm oil after being refined for the food industry. The fat in the palm fruit will start degrading when normal bruising happens during the fruit’s handling. The longer the transportation time, the more the fats in the palm fruit degrade.
Chemical Function/Application:
- Biodiesel: It is not surprising to find palm fatty acid or PFAD in biodiesel uses. It’s a cheaper alternative for biodiesel and much more economical too, due to its low cost. Modern palm oil refineries will consistently produce PFAD with FFA content higher than 88%, and crude palm oils also contain non-glyceride minor components that have been associated with health benefits.
- Soaps: A lot of liquid soaps and bar soaps contain palm fatty acid or PFAD. PFAD is used to make soaps, and later on distributed to markets and hotels.
- Bags: Depending on the grade and type of the palm fatty acid, they are often used to make paper bags, bulker bags, drums, IBCs, flexibags, and bulk shipments.
