Chemical Uses
Sulfuric acid is used in many industries, however, they are most commonly found in the following areas:
- Production of chemicals at an industrial level: Industries often use sulfuric acid in producing phosphoric acids. Phosphoric acids are used to manufacture phosphate fertilizers. It can also be used to make ammonium sulfate, a nitrogen fertilizer that is commonly produced as a byproduct from coking plants supplying iron and steel making plants.
- Industrial cleaning agent: Industries often use sulfuric acids in large quantities to remove oxidation, rust, and scaling from rolled sheets and billets. After all that is done, industries will sell it to automobile and major appliances industries.
- Some industries also add hydrogen peroxide to sulfuric acid to produce piranha solutions. It’s a very powerful but toxic cleaning solution to clean substrate surfaces (multilayer surfaces).
- Catalyst: Sulfuric acid can be used as a catalytic chemical. Industries will often use sulfuric acid to convert cyclohexanone oxime to caprolactam (used to make nylon). Some other industries also use sulfuric acid to make hydrochloric acid from salt (Mannheim process).
- Electrolyte: In the automotive industry, sulfuric acid is used as an electrolyte in lead-acid batteries.
